While Ethereum-based layer-2 solutions focus on hyperscaling the network, Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin thinks layer-3 solutions will serve a very different purpose, “personalized function.”
dated September 17 by post Expressing his thoughts, Buterin shared his three “visions” of what layer-3 solutions could be used for in the future.
According to the Ethereum co-founder, the third layer in blockchain networks only makes sense when it offers a different function to the second layers.
“The three-tier scaling structure that involves superimposing the same scaling structure often doesn’t work well. Putting rollup on rollup and having both layers of rollup use the same technology certainly doesn’t work.”
On the other hand, Buterin said that a three-tier structure, where the second and third tiers have different purposes, could work.
One of the uses of Layer-3, according to Buterin, could offer “personalized functionality”. For example, privacy-based applications can serve privacy-protecting operations to layer-2 using ZK rollups.
Additionally, “personalized scaling” can also be a use case for custom applications that don’t want to use the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) for computation.
Buterin said layer-3 could also be used for “not-so-trusted” scaling via ZK-proof technology. Buterin thinks this could be particularly beneficial for enterprise-level blockchain applications.
Still, Buterin is unsure whether third layers will be more efficient than the current second layer model when developing personalized application on Ethereum.
